Topics: Conservation | Loons

Answer: photos of loons throughout Maine!

Judging from the response we’ve seen to the first Maine Audubon Loon Photo Contest, plenty of talented folks are focusing on Maine’s iconic loons.

Sixty-one photographers from hometowns in eight different states entered more than 200 images of loons they photographed in Maine. Four judges selected top three winners, and 300 voters chose top three “People’s Choice” photographs.

Casco Bay Frames and Gallery in Portland, the contest’s sponsor, will archivally frame the judges’ selections.

Like the annual Maine Audubon Loon Count, which enlists more than 1,000 volunteers to help scientists assess the size and health of Maine’s loon population, the contest connected people to a struggling species they find fascinating. and worthy of conservation. Our thanks to everyone who entered, judged, and voted.
