Searching for Ansers

No, we didn't misspell the name of this great trip! Anseriformes is the order of birds that includes ducks, geese, swans, and their allies. With 30 or more species of waterfowl regularly sighted in southern Maine every year, the area ranks near the top for great duck watching. Species diversity is at a high point in November as migrants from the north gather on Maine’s still-open waters. At times it’s not unusual to see a dozen or more species in large mixed rafts, among them ruddy ducks, both scaup, and American coots. And wherever a lot of ducks gather, there is always the possibility of unexpected species. Join Maine Audubon naturalist Eric Hynes for a van trip to various rivers, lakes, marshes, and shorelines around southern Maine to observe as many waterfowl species as possible. Specific destinations will be chosen the day of the trip based on recent sightings.
