CLUP: North Woods ConservationSeptember 25, 2009 Topics: Conservation | Forestry | LURC
One of the best ways to protect the wildlife, habitat, and character of Maine's North Woods is keeping the Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) strong. For the next decade, this plan from Maine's Land Use Regulation Commission (LURC) will guide land use in 10 million acres of Maine. Already, development has spread into distant parts of Maine's North Woods—and that could continue with little or no oversight without this updated plan. It proposes concentrating most development near existing communities and infrastructure to protect recreational opportunities, high-value natural resources, and the character of its vast and predominantly undeveloped remote forest landscape. Please voice your support for the updated plan. Let LURC commissioners know you want them to protect important wildlife habitat and the remote North Woods experience. Attend a public hearing: Augusta: Monday, Sept. 28, Senator Inn, 284 Western Avenue; Bangor: Tuesday, Sept. 29, Ramada Inn, 357 Odlin Road; and Presque Isle: Wednesday, Sept. 30, Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center, 116 Main Street. All sessions from 1–4:30 p.m. and 6–10 p.m. Submit written comments by Oct. 21 to: Maine Land Use Regulation Commission Or e-mail LURC@maine.gov, and include "CLUP" in subject line. |
