Dear MA: Seeing my grandkids over the holidays has prompted me to ask: does Maine Audubon get kids outdoors and teach them something about nature?
Absolutely! Here’s a sample menu of what’s coming up soon, for kids only—maybe your grandkids! Our naturalists and environmental educators are experts at leading activities indoors and outdoors that teach young people about nature, wildlife, and conservation. More detailed information at www.maineaudubon.org. At Fields Pond Audubon Center in Holden, (207) 989-2591: School Vacation Day Camp for ages 7-13, Feb. 16-19. Kids can participate one or more days, each featuring nature-related activities and time outdoors. 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; members $40/day; $140/four days; nonmembers $50/day; $175/four days. Spring programs for youth and families, especially during school spring-break, April 19-23. Call the center for more info. Summer programs for youth and families. Check our Web site in February for descriptions and dates of day-long and multiday programs. At Gilsland Farm Audubon Center in Falmouth, (207) 781-2330, ext. 209: Nature Discovery Preschool for children ages 2-6, multiday sessions. Winter sessions are underway; spring sessions start March 1. Stories, songs, games, movement, natural crafts, and plenty of exploration outdoors. Parents may join in, too. Prices vary, per session. School Vacation Day Camp for grades 1-5, February 16-19 and April 19-23. Group games, creative arts, and nature exploration on a 65-acre wildlife sanctuary. Choose one or more days. From 9 a.m.-3 p.m.; members $50/day, $175/four-day Feb. session, $225/five-day April session; nonmembers: $65/day, $240/four-day Feb session, $295/five-day April session. Summer Day Camp and Preschool for ages 2-11, June 28-August 27. Many one-and two-week sessions, with different nature-related themes. Some preschool sessions include parents. Through hikes, stories, songs, movement, group games, natural crafts, and more, kids explore and learn about wildlife and habitat in forest, meadow, salt marsh, and pond. Safe free play, too.
