Wings of Autumn on Monhegan IITopics: Trips
Located 12 miles offshore, Monhegan Island offers refuge for migrating birds moving along the coastal flyway. Late September is peak for falcons and Accipiters and the aerial pursuits of their preferred avian prey can be astonishing. At this time the neotropical migrants start to give way to thrushes, sparrows, and woodpeckers, maximizing the diversity on the island. It is also the peak time for catching a vagrant. Lark Sparrows are annual but species such as Hermit Warbler and Say’s Phoebe have turned up in recent years. Seabirds also pass by in impressive numbers with plunge-diving northern gannets leading the show. We will travel by ferry, scanning for seabirds en route. Price includes ferry and leadership (with an optional van ride from Portland to the ferry). Learn More About |
